Historical information | Historical information Temples Museums Accommodation The administrative center of the Luh region. Founded in 1959. The distance form the working settlement Luh to the city of Ivanovo is 94 km. The population is apr. 3,300 people. The nearest railway station is Vichuga North 35 km from Luh. . The settlement of Luh is one of the most ancient on the regions territory. The exact date of its foundation is not stated. With the forming of Great Novgorod- Suzdal principality Luh together with other towns of former Suzdal principality was included into it until the reunion in 1392 with the Great Moscow principality. Academician S.M.Soloviov mentions Luh in his multy-volumed work “The history of Russia from ancient times” in connection with the Tatar invasion of Rus in 1428 when they captured Kostroma, Plios and Luh and went down the Volga. It is considered to count the age of the settlement from this date as officially mentioned in history. Later Luh is mentioned in connection with the Ioan’s the Trird will concerning the inheriting of 66 towns by his son Vassily; among them Luh ancestral land of prince Belsky was granted. The lands of Kineshma region had been granted to Belsky long ago, in connection of princes Belsky transition to service from Lithuania to Russia. A boyar came to Russia together with the Belskys. He was at serving Belskys and didn’t want to become a Catholic and a Uniat. . This boyar Tihon by name founded a hermitage in 1498 at a wild swampy place on the banks of the river Luh. He dedicated all his life to the God’s service. In 1998 St. Nickolas-Tihon-Luh cloister(Abby) was 500 years old. Spiritual life was reborn in one of the ancient Russian sacred lands. Now the cloister is one of the main sights of the whole textile region and the Luh land. In 1571 the Luh lands were passed to the monastery under the authority of which it had been until 1764. Then the town and land were owned by princes Dolgoruky, Viazemsky, Kourakin and others. In 1608 the town was invaded by the Polish- Lithuanians and was liberated by the regiment of Luh, Kineshma, Yurievets citizens under the guidance of voivode (commander of an army) Gregory Lapsha. Tsar Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky’s addressing to the Northern cities contributed to the defeat of the invaders and their expulsion. In this addressing the Tsar called the Russian people to save Motherland and Faith. In the 17 century the town of Luh is the center of the big region. In 1778 the Luh region became a part of the Kostroma province. During this period the following stone churches were erected: Resurrection Church (1680), Assumption Cathedra (1754), Transfiguration Church (1797). The perish Holy trinity cathedral was reorganized in Luh nowadays, it is acting since 1991. Luh remained a town until 1925. In 1925 Luh was transformed into a village by the request of its citizens. It was done not to lessen private plots of land where the Luh citizens grew vegetables for themselves and for sale. In 1959 the village of Luh was referred to the category of town settlements - working settlements by the request of citizens. In the working settlement of Luh there are vegetable - drying factory, milk - processing plant, embroidery factory, industrial factory with furniture and cloth workshop, brick factory and the department for construction and repairing of roads. It is within 5 km to the north-east from the Lukh settlement. Situated on a hill near the road Lukh-Vichuga-Kineshma on the right bank of the Lukh river at the flow it into the Vozopol
river. Grounded in 1498 (at the support of prince Belsky-owner of Lukh and its adjoining territories) by a monk – hermit Tikhon Lukhovsky. He grounded it in a lonely swamped place among forests on the bank of the Lukh river and all his life he devoted to the God’s service. In 1571 Lukh lands were turned over to the monastery under which authority they were up to 1764. In 1571 there were two wooden churches in the monastery.: one of Nikolay, the miracle man and another of Dmitry, thee great martyr as well as there were fraternal and priory churches. In 1998 St. Nikolo-Tikhon monastery was 500 years old. In one of the oldest
sacred places of the Russian land it has begun a sacred life again. Now the monastery is
the main sightseeing of the Lukh land and of all the textile land.

Open from 10.00 to 17.00, closed - monday. | The creation of the public museum was started by regional specialists - enthusiasts who founded the basis of the collection and the future state museum. Its direct birth is connected with the name of the Russian inventor, the founder of electro arc welding of metals of N.N.Benardos. In July, 1981 in Loukh the museum dedicated to his life and his inventive activity was opened.
In 1998 the new study of local lore exposition was open. The most significant in the museum collection - N.N.Benardos's original drawings - 80 units of storage.
