Historical information | Historical information Âèäû òóðèçìà Temples Museums Accommodation The towns history (Sereda in the past) goes into the depth of centuries. We have only some data what the settlement was like in the beginning of the 17 century. It had a double name then: Sereda-Oupino and belonged to prince Dmitry Cherkassky (the gift of Ivan the Terrible to the brothers of his bride - Kabardin princess Maria Temrukovna Cherkasskaya who was the second of his seven wives). Since 1696 it belonged to prince Baratinsky, fellow worker of Peter the First. Later the village came into possession of E.I.Bibikova, the sister of Sergey and Matvey Mouraviov-Apostol, the Decembrists. Since the middle of 19 century Sereda was owned by a historian Bantish-Kamensky, A.S.Pushkin’s pen-friend. No official documents concerning the name of the village were preserved. Some researchers think that the market day here was Wednesday (Sereda) which explains the name of the village. The others think that it’s explained by the fact that the village was in the middle between of Shuya and Nerehta and between Ivanovo-Voznesensk and Plios. In the middle of 18 century the post and trade way went through the territory of the modern town, connecting Nerehta and Shuya. It was called “Catherine’s way” because Empress Catherine II paid special attention to this way. Since a long time people were busy with different handicrafts and agriculture. They grew flex in summer, made yarn and weaved canvases. The government Decree of 1775 allowed “everybody to have different kinds of weaving looms and to produce different kinds of hand- made goods”. This gave the beginning to the construction of small manual flex woolen and cotton manufactures. The construction of railways began in the region with the development of the textile industry in the end of the 19 century. The growth of the future town territory took place owing to the growth of manufactures. On the 27 of July 1918 the former village Sereda receives the status of a town and becomes the center of the Sereda region. The border lines and regional authorities were officially affirmed on the 2 of August 1918 on the regional Meeting of the Soviets of workers and peasants Deputies. The town grew and developed with the developing of the textile industry. On 13 of March 1941 the town of Sereda was renamed into the town of Fourmanov in the connection of the 15-th anniversary of the death of D.A.Fourmanov, the writer and revolutionary who was born and spent in Sereda the first 6 years of his childhood. The region was renamed after the town. Since then the town of Fourmanov is the administrative center of the Fourmanov region.
